3BHK Residence at Roop Building, Chembur
A contemporary home with a subtle classical influence
The design introduces classical elements such as mouldings in a restrained and modern way, avoiding heavy ornamentation. Existing furniture was reworked with updated finishes to align with the overall language of the space. The result is a balanced composition where traditional detailing meets a clean, contemporary approach.

The Roop Building residence was envisioned as a refined balance between Indian classical sensibilities and contemporary living, designed within a constrained budget while maintaining a sense of elegance and cohesion. The brief focused on creating a warm, culturally rooted home without relying on heavy or excessive detailing.

The living space forms the heart of the home, where the design carefully integrates the client’s existing furniture into a refreshed setting. The sofas and armchairs were reupholstered, and the wooden elements were polished to align with the new design language. Classical mouldings on the walls, finished in soft paint tones, establish an elegant framework, while the furniture introduces a subtle Indian character. On the adjacent wall, a combination of MDF panelling and paint is used to maintain visual balance without overpowering the space.

Curves play a defining role throughout the home, responding to the client’s preference for softer forms. Curved wall panels and transitions are introduced across spaces, including a subtle arch detail below the beam in the passage, creating continuity and a sense of flow. These elements are complemented by understated wooden textures, reinforcing warmth and grounding the overall palette. A statement chandelier at the center of the living room enhances the classical narrative while maintaining a contemporary restraint.

The kitchen is designed to be minimal and efficient, using a single-tone laminate palette with a refined border detail across the shutters. A PU finish adds a slight sheen, elevating the overall look while remaining within budget. Profile shutters are selectively introduced to create openness and visual lightness.
In the private spaces, the design shifts towards individuality while maintaining a cohesive language. Instead of extensive panelling, wallpapers are used strategically to define each room, offering visual richness while keeping the approach cost-effective.
The parents’ bedroom is designed with a calm and traditional undertone. Curved wooden framing paired with fabric-finish wallpaper creates a soft, layered backdrop. Fluted elements are introduced within the wardrobe to subtly break the surface, while a mandir, positioned as per vastu, becomes a focal feature with a three-layered arched backdrop, adding depth and spiritual significance to the space.

The master bedroom carries a more expressive identity, inspired by a peacock theme. The wallpaper is framed within mouldings to create a structured composition, while the headboard colour draws from the same palette. Curved elements continue on the adjacent wall through textured finishes and a minimal TV unit. A dedicated swing area is integrated into the room, highlighted by a layered ceiling design that visually distinguishes the space. The ceiling itself incorporates soft curves, complemented by a crockery/storage unit finished in profile shutters. The wardrobe design follows the same language, with curved borders and a PU finish to maintain continuity.

The kids’ bedroom introduces a fresher, more playful tone with green accents. Curved mouldings combined with leaf-patterned wallpaper create a lively yet controlled backdrop. The headboard follows the same colour palette, while the study area is highlighted through curved overhead panels and coordinated wardrobe detailing. Fluted elements and soft curves are used throughout to maintain consistency with the overall design language. A dresser with an arched mirror and a subtle ledge below enhances functionality while adding to the visual softness of the space.
Lighting across the home is designed to complement the materials and forms, enhancing depth while maintaining a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The overall design moves beyond budget constraints by focusing on proportion, detail, and thoughtful layering. The result is a home that feels elegant, culturally rooted, and contemporary — where classical elements are reinterpreted through a softer, more modern lens.
